Uber & UberEats (ASU)

Uber and UberEats drivers and their families needed a trustworthy path to an ASU degree through Uber's tuition-support benefit, but the platform faced stale Algolia search results that didn't reflect ASU's latest programs, RFI-submission API failures that disrupted information requests, complex eligibility and tuition-transfer rules to enforce for drivers and family members, and inconsistent analytics across a funnel spanning auth, driver verification, eligibility and submission.

Main features

What the platform does

  • Smart brand detection

The site detects whether a visitor comes from Uber Pro or Uber Eats and instantly applies matching branding, imagery and wording — so it always feels purpose-built.

  • Seamless partner login

No new account or password. Users log in through Uber's own secure OAuth login (exactly like the Uber app) and return recognized as a verified partner.

  • Extend benefits to family

Users pick education for themselves or a family member, expanding the form to capture their details — turning a personal perk into a household benefit.

  • Real-time course discovery

Users browse and search hundreds of ASU degrees and courses with results that narrow as they type, filterable by area of interest, on both desktop and mobile-optimized layouts.

  • Personalized learning paths

The site steers each person to the right path: full degree programs (including ASU Online) or Continuing & Professional Education (CPE) shorter courses and certificates for quick upskilling.

How it played out

Challenges, approach and results

Keeping Algolia index updated

The program database did not always reflect ASU's latest degree offerings, leading to outdated search results.

Automated Algolia sync

Implemented a scheduled job to update the Algolia index with ASU's latest program data, ensuring real-time accuracy.

Accurate degree listings

Users now access real-time degree program updates via an optimized search experience.

RFI submission API failures

Errors in API response handling caused disruptions in processing information requests.

Improved RFI submission handling

Integrated better error-handling mechanisms with status codes and a retry system to reduce failures.

Efficient RFI processing

Reduced errors and improved response times for handling Uber driver education requests.

User access & transfer limits

Managing eligibility and tuition transfer rules for Uber drivers and their families.

Transfer validation

Established API-based validation for Uber's tuition transfer program, ensuring compliance with eligibility limits.

Seamless enrollment & transfers

Improved backend logic ensured smooth eligibility checks and controlled tuition transfer limits.

Analytics visibility complexity

DataLayer events span the entire funnel — auth, driver verification, eligibility, the family-member branch, RFI submission — so keeping every event consistent and accurate across that many pages and states was the hard part.

Standardized dataLayer implementation

Consolidated and standardized how dataLayer events are structured and triggered across the flow, so every milestone fires with the correct data and timing regardless of which path a user takes.

Reliable, trustworthy analytics

Tracking is now consistent end-to-end, giving accurate data across the whole journey without page-by-page inconsistencies to chase down.

UI & accessibility challenges

RDS (Rocket Design System) components had occasional UI inconsistencies impacting user experience.

Regular UI & performance audits

Addressed RDS component issues through structured testing and feedback loops.

User-friendly & scalable platform

Enhanced UI and responsive design made education opportunities more accessible.

Tech stack

  • Vue.js
  • Algolia
  • AWS (S3 & CloudFront)

Impact

The Uber & ASU partnership has successfully created a streamlined pathway for drivers and their families to pursue higher education. By resolving technical debt in search indexing, API reliability and eligibility validation, the platform now provides a dependable, high-performance gateway to ASU's world-class degree programs, driving higher engagement and successful enrollment for Uber's global workforce.

Problem
Uber and UberEats drivers and their families needed a trustworthy path to an ASU degree through Uber's tuition-support benefit, but the platform faced stale Algolia search results that didn't reflect ASU's latest programs, RFI-submission API failures that disrupted information requests, complex eligibility and tuition-transfer rules to enforce for drivers and family members, and inconsistent analytics across a funnel spanning auth, driver verification, eligibility and submission.
Project scope
Built a partner learning platform with smart brand detection (matching Uber Pro or Uber Eats branding, imagery and wording automatically), seamless login through Uber's own OAuth, and a form that extends the education benefit to a driver's family members. Added real-time course discovery across 100+ ASU degrees and courses with type-ahead search and interest filtering, and personalized routing between full degree programs (including ASU Online) and shorter Continuing & Professional Education courses. Fixed the underlying platform issues: a scheduled job to keep the Algolia index synced with ASU's latest program data, better RFI-submission error handling with status codes and retries, API-based validation for Uber's tuition-transfer eligibility rules, and a standardized dataLayer implementation for consistent analytics across the whole funnel. Stack: Vue.js, Algolia, AWS (S3 & CloudFront).
Verified results
2 unified branded experiences (Uber Pro and Uber Eats), 3 integrated learning tracks, 100+ searchable programs and courses, and 1 shared learning platform for drivers and their families.
